It's pieces like this that
make me wonder what the relationship between United Crafts and
Onondaga Metal Shops was. The technique and quality of the work,
design and patinas were very similar. This is signed with the
OMS mark and measures 20 3/4" (handle to handle) x 11".

This example of Onondaga Metal Shops has been
confused for Gustav Stickley many times. I have seen these at different
auctions and shops on and off the web attributed to Gus because
of the lack of a signature. The execution is closer to Gustav Stickley
than Benedict Studios. After the company was purchased by Harry
Benedict the production of these changed slightly and under H B
direction were nearly always marked. It measures 20 5/8" in
diameter. |

This is a fireside coal box probably produced
in England during the Arts and Crafts period. It is made of copper
plated steel and polished, as they typically were and mounted on
four steel casters with wheels. Would be nice next to a fireplace
holding kindling wood or paper for starting fires. Measures 15
3/4 inches tall x 20 inches wide x 12 inches deep. |

Benedict Studios Pipe Humidor This was produced
from copper, brass and oak, retains it's original patina and is
in very good condition. Benedict made a humidor that was copper
and brass very similar to the body of this and it sat on curled
legs. He took that form ended the straps in small trays that would
hold the bowl of the pipe, attached clips on the sides to hold
the stems of the pipes and fastened all this along with a match
holder to a quarter sawn white oak base. It's a pretty cool piece.
Measures 8 1/2"
tall x 7" square. |

Marie Zimmermann Covered Dish, hand hammered copper. This NYC metalworker and jewelers work can be found in nearly every major collection of decorative arts in the country. Copper fire place hood. It is not very often that hoods come on the market. This was removed from a small bungalow that was being torn down for reasons unknown. The installation of this would be very easy. It has edges running up both sides that lay flat against the wall and would accept round headed screws. Measures 33 inches tall and is 45 inches wide, the bottom comes out from the wall 6 inches and the top is flat against the wall.

This interesting double candle sconce came from a local upstate NY estate. The patina and handwork on the copper and the way it is fastened to the oak is reminiscent of Charles Rohlfs. I almost expected to find a Rohlfs mark on it.
This is 15 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches wide.

Rebecca Cauman was a gifted designer, metalworker and enameler. She is listed in both the New York Society of Craftsman and the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston. letter file, stamp box, ink well, pen tray, calendar frame and paper clip.

in pretty good condition showing some wear. |

This is an interesting piece. I don't know the maker but it is high quality work. In a way it reminds me of work done by Van Erp and in other ways it reminds me of Gustav Stickley. In any event it's quite nice.

Onondaga Metal Shops Tray. Great workmanship is displayed in this early tray and it's signed with the OMS mark. Comparing some of the work by Onondaga Metal Shops and early Gustav Stickley metal you can see the similarities in execution. It wasn't until later when Harry Benedict took over that their work changed. This tray measures 20 7/8" long (including handles) by 11" wide, the patina was helped by Mike Adams and is a wonderful warm brown. |

and this, although small, is an exceptional example. Made from copper and

the recessed area that the glass is grouted into. Excellent original patina
