After all that has been written about Gustav Stickley and his achievements it is not difficult to understand why every piece of furniture that surfaces by The Craftsman Workshops has historic importance, some more than others. However, it is rare when undocumented pieces surface, this server is one of these instances. I believe it was produced in late 1900 or early 1901. Documentation on his earliest designs show a server similar to this. If you were to follow the development of his designs and how they evolved you could see this fits very early in the progression.

The wood is American Chestnut, many times the wood of choice prior to 1904. This server which was designed without a back splash is quite minimal having a molded edge on the horizontal shelf and the board supporting the drawers. The slightly chamfered tenons are keyed by simple angled wedges and the drawers are all assembled with hand cut dovetails still showing the scribe marks by the craftsman that produced it. Server measures 33 inches tall x 42 inches wide x 20 ½ inches deep. Original surface and in very good condition.

Gus bedroom furniture has always been hard to come by. This is a nice chest of drawers in original finish and good condition. I did have the entire piece re-glued. All drawers slide easily. measures 41 3/4" tall x 36" wide x 20 3/4" deep.
Gustav Stickley Tree of Life Stand, rarest version. This was done with two different carvings on the sides, this is the rare one. The leather is all intact with the exception of a half inch on one of the top shelves is missing and one tack is missing at the same point as the missing leather. The finish has had work but the entire piece has not been refinished.

This early and rare Gustav Stickley open bookcase is in fantastic original condition. The deep dark red brown color lets only a hint of the beautiful quarter sawn wood show through. The diminutive size of this case makes it usable in a variety of ways that a larger case wouldn't. This measures 45 inches tall x 35 1/2 wide x 11 inches deep, the through tenons add another 1 3/4 inches to both sides.

I would have to call this an unusual and reasonably rare Gustav Stickley desk chair. It is cataloged as number 2578 in the 1902 retail plates in "The Early Works of Gustav Stickley". It is in wonderful condition with the original dark finish and decal used from 1902 through 1904. It does have a new natural rush seat.

Gustav Stickley candlesticks are quite rare. This is a single of a very desirable form, the strap stick. I find it curious that the bobche has a very similar form to that of Roycroft Tulip sticks. Victor Toothacher did work for both Gus and Elbert Hubbard maybe he had a hand in this. Patina is very good and original and the stick is marked with the later Gus die stamp mark. Stands 12 1/4" tall and the base is 6" square.

The morris chair is unique. Its design is tight and compact with greater energy than felt in later designs. This was also produced from chestnut and like the server was finished in green that is still evident in protected areas of the piece. The arms are wider than the narrow arm example but narrower than the wide arm. The legs have a reverse taper that is interrupted with the notched feet, a detail not seen on any other morris chairs. The seat support is a simple frame wrapped in jute webbing with a decking of original green fabric, possibly the proverbial Craftsman canvas. Like the server and other early pieces all the edges are chamfered. Another detail; not seen often is the graduated chamfer on the edge of the arch measuring ¾ of an inch at the ends tapering to 3/8 in the middle.

Both pieces are in original surface and in very good condition. Chair measures 38 inches tall x 29 ¾ inches wide x 30 ¾ inches deep and the server measures 33 inches tall x 42 inches wide x 20 ½ inches deep.

This is a hard to find 3 drawer Gustav spindle library table.
